Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to send a girl to college?

It costs approximately $3,900 per year to send a young woman to college, encompassing all her educational expenses and associated management costs.

What is different about the S.H.E. College Fund?

At the heart of the S.H.E. Fund is relationship. Each student who is supported by the Fund receives not only the money for one to four years of college (depending on her grades and motivation), but also the support from the S.H.E. Team and her funder in the form of communication, encouragement, guidance and love.

How much of my donation goes to supporting the students?

We hear from all directions how less than 5% of a donation to large, impersonal organizations actually gets to the people in need. The S.H.E. Fund is a radical opportunity to make a difference in a direct and deeply relational way. As reported in the 2022 financial statement, 90% of all contributions and donations is directly invested in the students.

How do I offer support?

There are two ways to offer support — you can be a Primary Funder for one student for an agreed upon number of years; or you can make a contribution of any amount to the General Fund.

As a Primary Funder, you contribute $3900/year for one to four years for a specific student, encompassing all her educational expenses and associated management costs. We will facilitate your direct relationship with the student to whatever extent you wish, and we will report on her progress three times a year.

The General Fund supports students who do not have a one-to-one donor, as well as the operating expenses of the S.H.E. College Fund.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, your donation is tax deductible in the United States. We’ll provide a tax receipt shortly after each donation is made.

What is the ratio of admin to education costs?

If I become a primary funder, what happens if either party needs to cancel the agreement?

We understand unforeseen circumstances arise, and we aim for strong relationships with open communication. In other words, if something would prevent you from completing the agreement, we hope you would let us know immediately. Similarly, we are in close communication with students to ensure they're always on track, but should something happen to prevent your student from completing her education, we would communicate with you quickly. Based on our experience, both situations are extremely rare.
